Your computer is an important tool for your business. Whatever the project is, big or small, your computer is your main tool for work. And that’s why cybersecurity is essential for your device!
The global Linux server operating system is known for having a messy reputation, primarily with its security management and enterprise patch management. Security and patch management are significant in cyber defenses for your computer, and because Linux struggles with these two elements, the system is vulnerable.
What the Experts Are Saying
CEO and founder of Adaptiva, Deepak Kumar, has stated that there are three overlooked, but critical, threats that are targeting the Linux server today: outdated kernels, misconfigured servers, and supply-chain vulnerabilities.
Outdated kernels are often left unpatched for months, maybe even years, which is why they are an easy tool for attackers. Misconfigured services are also easy targets, especially if they are in common digital contains or the cloud. As for supply chain vulnerabilities, hackers use these in open-source tools to send massive amounts of these attacks, sometimes enabling them to remain under the radar.
Adaptiva is an autonomous endpoint management firm, which is why they share this information and what should be done to improve the security measures Linux currently has.
Linux’s Proposed Solution
Linux has taken note of this dire situation, so the company has stated the decision to use automation to eliminate delays and gaps in the system.
Statistics state that about 77% of organizations take over a week to deploy fully operational patches, so attackers can still sneak into the system. Automation is meant to rapidly complete this process; it should take only hours instead of days to complete such a necessary update.
The Root of the Problem
However, any automation protocols should still be over viewed by a human. Such a process should be monitored by IT and security professionals, to ensure that automation not only runs smoothly, but also thoroughly detects and patches any holes in the security.
Kumar has stated that it is a fatal misconception to believe that all Linux systems are inherently more secure than other OSes. Like any other system, Linux can’t fully operate on it’s own, which is why human supervision is required.
Complacency is not the only issue. It takes time to make a tough decision, and Linux faces pressure to maintain system updates. And sometimes, system updates may take priority over establishing security measures. Putting off work like this until later could be risky; a hacker could find a way inside the system before you even begin system updates.
