The Extinction of Standalone Apps?

AI has become deeply woven into nearly every layer of technology. Search and productivity tools, development platforms, computing, and more. You name it. AI is becoming more integrated in technology, for better or worse.

Google is one company that wants to utilize AI features. CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the company is no longer simply adding AI features to their products. Instead, the company is building a full-stack AI ecosystem.

Which brings an interesting question: are standalone apps ending?

Moving Forward

Google has decided to move from processing 9.2 tokens initially to quadrillions of tokens today. The developer community has about 8:5 million users, and Google is known for users primarily using the search engine.

At Google I/O 2026, the company shared numerous announcements about changes to come. Changes intended to make life easier and more fun for Google clients.

Important Monumental Shifts

Here are a few key things that Goggle announced at the event:

Gemini Omni and Gemini 3.5 Flash-Omni can generate any output from any input, which accompanied by Gemini 3.5 Flash; it can operate in a league of its own for speed and accuracy as the default search engine.

Agentic AI and Gemini Spark-a personal AI agent that can run 24/7 in the new anti-gravity framework, Spark can connect Google Workspace and over 30 third-party apps to help users plan events, manage schedules, and execute complex logic

Intelligent Search Box and Universal Cart-a new AI search box with 24/7 background search agents scouring the web for users

Android XR and Intelligent Eyewear-smart glasses that can either display informational information, or work through audio command

C2PA SenseID-allows users to right-click any image to detect if the content was AI-generated

The Threat to Standalone Apps

Because of these innovative measures, it is difficult to tell if Google inadvertently or intentionally made a vast array of specialized companies and applications redundant. Google has introduced new standalone AI search tools, web builders and freelance designers, transcription and writing tools, and entry-level coding IDEs and copilots.

Some experts argue that specialized tools will continue to persist in the world of technology. These tools offer features that AI struggles to replicate, meaning that human touch in web design and coding is still relevant.

However, that kind of deeply integrated workflow could place significant pressure on traditional productive platforms, especially Microsoft.

Google has announced that their leadership is framing AGI as a near-term possibility rather than a distant concept in the world of sci-fi. This is especially evident in their plans with Gemini Omni.

To put it lightly, Google is adapting to the agentic workforce.

What is Next?

Google is aiming to bridge the gap between its digital agents and physical robotics, evident in how they plan to use Gemini Omni. For Google’s competitors, such as Apple, Microsoft, and Meta, they must pivot hard to keep up with their competition.

Apple will need to leverage their hardware footprint to offer an AI that can match Google’s cloud-heavy approach. Microsoft must defend their company’s enterprise by embedding AI capabilities more deeply into Office 365 to stay ahead of Google. Finally, Meta most likely will continue open-source models to commoditize its foundational layer to counter Google.

Google wishes to focus on creating a new ecosystem in technology for their users. A new ecosystem that thinks, anticipates, and creates autonomously. Therefore, such an adaptation may lead to the end of using standalone apps.
