Vulnerability in Dell Computers

Dell is known for how handy their computers and laptops are, especially for business owners and entrepreneurs. Many people prefer using a Dell device for their large assortment of projects. However, like with other devices, Dell laptops are at the risk of becoming vulnerable to malware attacks.

What are Hackers Up to?

Hackers have discovered a weakness in Dell’s inbuilt ControlVault3 firmware. This flaw in security can potentially provide them with unauthorized access to a victim’s computer system.

The hackers can steal passwords and biometric data, but they can also exploit this opening to establish a backdoor connection. With a backdoor connection, they can reenter the system and infect it further with malware.

This vulnerability has affected over 100 models of Dell laptops. The issue seems to have stemmed from a flaw found in the ReVault firmware embedded in Broadcom’s BCM5820x series of chips, a tool found in a majority of Dell’s devices.

Who is at Risk?

As previously stated, many business owners prefer Dell devices to conduct their projects and store their data. However, professionals in various industries also use Dell devices, including government agencies, technologists, and cybersecurity experts. Meaning, anyone who has a Dell device with a weak cybersecurity system is at risk

Malware is a serious threat to anyone who is targeted by hackers. If these hackers exploit a flaw in the system, then the consequences of their attack can be dire. They can steal data and exploit it, even selling it to other like minded criminals. Whether it is personal or corporate data, the hackers will want it.

How is Dell Taking Action?

Through recent assessments, the vulnerability has received a Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) score that is significantly high, which means this is classified as a “high” threat. These scores highly the severity of the risk and the likelihood of a cyberattack happening.

In response, Dell has decided to take action. They released an official statement assuring their users that their security teams are working closely with Broadcom to address the vulnerability issue. Since March this year, Dell had a team of experts studying the risks and vulnerability in their devices. They also released a patch in mid-June this year that addressed the security flaw and prevented further exploitation.

What Can We Do?

As the work is continuously operating, Dell’s clients should be wary of misinformation. Some online forums like Reddit will provide misinformation that may only escalate their problem. One misguided recommendation is to wipe and reinstall Windows OS from the system completely. However, the vulnerability is not within the operating system; it is rooted in the device’s firmware.

Instead of following things off other websites, users should follow Dell’s official guidance. Learning from the company directly can provide helpful pointers to safeguard their devices’ cybersecurity.
