The Problem with Data Centers

Data centers are massive structures that can house thousands of specialized computer chips to perform complex calculations. Just one facility can cover millions of square feet, built with millions of pounds of metals and wires and run for hours. Most of the world’s biggest companies have been supporting the establishment of building data centers, noting that they are nothing short of a technological wonder.

However, there is one thing to keep in mind: people hate data centers.

Who Hates Data Centers?

People in different states hate data centers for different reasons. Residents of Nevada state that data centers take up their precious water supply. Good citizens of Sioux Falls oppose the construction of some centers because of the obscenities of their city councilmembers.  People in Virginia are disgusted by how their state leads the nation in the construction of these centers.

All around the globe, people hate data centers. However, the biggest hate hot spot lies in the state of Georgia.

Georgia is a state where the one thing that anyone agrees on, regardless of their different perspectives, is that they all hate data centers. Data centers were originally built in the state to create a shift in the state’s economy, but the impact has been negative throughout the years since 2018.

The Problems Caused by Data Centers

One reason why people hate data centers is the speed and scale of their construction. Data centers take up a lot of electricity and resources to build, which can affect the power grids of local areas. People in some states, such as Georgia and Wyoming, are forced to pay for the power bills generated from these data centers, even if they themselves do not use them.

Environmental concerns are another reason why people hate these enters. Most data centers turn to dirty forms of energy just to meet their electricity needs. One data center in Memphis was reported for throwing out a bunch of polluted methane-powered generators. Some data centers may also require massive amounts of water, which depletes the resources for the local economy.

Perhaps the biggest concern is the lack of employment. Sure, people are hired to construct these data centers. However, once that step is completed, data centers tend to employ little to no people. They rely too much on AI or machinery that requires almost no human interference.
