The internet is required for a majority of services on computers. Applying for benefits, accessing healthcare or bank accounts, paying taxes or bills, and much more. You name it, it most likely has to be done online.
Not everyone can afford to have an internet connection, which is why online public services or locations that offer free internet are handy. However, hackers may exploit these options when they search for new targets.
With that said, some governments, such as the UK government, are establishing new plans to make these places safer for users.
What is the Plan?
The established plan is called the Government Cyber Action Plan. It was published on Tuesday, January 6th this year, and it was established to help the government adapt to combat the growing rate of online cyber-attacks.
The plan is backed by over 210 million pounds. The goal is to rapidly improve cyber defenses and digital resilience across government departments and the public sector for users of any sort to safely access their data and services.
Services are moving online, so they need to be secure and resilient in case of a cyberattack. A cyber-attack can take over a public service location and shut it down in mere minutes.
How the Plan Will Work
There are a few things that the UK government hopes that the plan will result in.
The first is a clearer visibility of risks. They hope that the plan shines light on cybersecurity on more people, so they can ensure that their devices and online services are protected better.
The second is the ability to take stronger action against future challenges. By taking action now and adapting to how cyberattacks are played out and change, the government departments can adapt accordingly for future attacks and prevent dire consequences.
Another factor is being able to respond to threats and incidents at a faster rate. Cyberattacks can happen quickly; hackers can exploit any vulnerable patches and gain access to the system in as quick as a few minutes. Cyber defense is essential to preventing attacks and protecting sensitive information from hackers.
Finally, the government hopes that the plan helps them establish a higher resilience. By boosting resilience, the government will be better prepared for future attacks and prevent critical damage.
Additional Notes
The Government Cyber Action Plan should bolster further steps for the UK to strengthen cyber defenses.
Weaknesses in software can lead to severe disruption to supply chains and essential daily services for individuals. The issues can be addressed with embedding basic software security practices in the software market.
Some companies like Cisco, Palo Alto Networks, and NNC Group are teaming up to provide helpful feedback for establishing future policy improvements.
Cyber risk is still high, which is why resilience is more essential than ever for the government’s mission.
