Computer Science Community at MIT

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a note-worthy college for people interested in studying computer science. And for the past decade, the campus has offered a doctoral-level study in the field through an interdisciplinary program. The program has been designed for students applying within specific science or engineering fields that require computers.

As interest has grown over the years, the school has decided to develop a new, stand-alone CSE PhD program to form a social community among students who are interested in computer science and engineering.

How the Program Works

Launched recently in 2023, the program is designed to blend both coursework and a thesis, but also use a methodological focus that makes it different from other MIT PhD programs.

Outgoing co-director Youssef Marzouk states that what makes the program unique is that “It’s not hosted by one specific department. The stand-alone program is, at its core, about computational science and cross-cutting methodology. We connect this research with people in a lot of different application areas.”

The program features two seminar series to keep students, faculty, and scientists connected and to meet each other. One is a weekly community seminar that focuses on internal speakers, and the others is a monthly-distinguished seminar in CSE to bring external speakers from various industry roles and institutions.

New Horizons

The curriculum has been structured around six core focus areas that are fundamental to CSE.

The six cores are discretization and numerical methods for partial differential equations; optimization methods; inference, statistical computing, and data-driving modeling; high performance computing, software engineering, and algorithms; mathematical foundations, and modeling.

Students who join the program are free to select and built their own thesis committee that includes others affiliated. This builds a sense of community and enables the students to engage on a science level as well as on an intellectual level.
